On the origins of fate, power, and material laws. The balloons (the largest containing cross-roads from a complex Shanghai road system) are reflective of perceived creative separation, floating (between an imperial palace and monastery) yet inextricably connected to the whole.
The addition of actual dice echoes Einstein's idea of God's dice; everything emanating from and relating back to unfathomable chance. This adds a 3 dimensional element bringing the piece into the space (and time) it occupies, and beyond what would otherwise be purely an illusory depth.
