About The Artwork

A continuation of the Manimal range of drawings I was in spired by the beautiful photography of Alfred Cheney Johnston from the book Jazz age beauties by Robert Hudovernik. The photographs of the many women who appeared for the Ziegfeld follies capture an element of both the time of the 1920's era but importantly the women themselves the book gives a brief insight to the lives of the women. What struck me that many of them drove their own destiny becoming successful in their own right balanced with some of the more tragic tales these women led. The search for stardom, adoration often faded but their lives were more than the show as their lime light faded they went on. Burn out beyond reflects the show but also the fading of that light the Peacock was associated with Juno a goddess who was also the protecting and guardian spirit of females. her Animal was depicted as a peacock, which is often used to symbolise a phoenix which is the continuation of the idea of rebirth.
