Signed Limited Edition Giclee Print of 50. In Arabic calligraphy, the ninety-first surah in the Holy Quran, Ash-Shams, meaning 'the sun'; is written exactly once in the Islamic Calligraphy Diwani Jali script to create an abstract stylized sun. (Full English Translation at the bottom) Traditionally, the Arabic Calligraphy Diwani Jali script, was not used to write the Holy Quran. Instead, this particular calligraphy script became popular in Turkey in the 1500 and 1600's for more bureaucratic and official uses as seals and crests. It's complex interweaving nature made it especially difficult to forge, but of course also more difficult to recite since it could not be read quickly or always decisively. This design is part of a long term project I'm working on called the 'The Quran of Solidarity'. I eventually plan to write the entire Quran in these abstract figural designs. Because of the time involved in creating each surah, I expect it will take me several years to finish the entire Quran. 9:01 By the sun and its brightness 9:02 And [by] the moon when it follows it 9:03 And [by] the day when it displays it 9:04 And [by] the night when it covers it 9:05 And [by] the sky and He who constructed it 9:06 And [by] the earth and He who spread it 9:07 And [by] the soul and He who proportioned it 9:08 And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness, 9:09 He has succeeded who purifies it, 9:10 And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]. 9:11 Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression, 9:12 When the most wretched of them was sent forth. 9:13 And the messenger of Allah [Salih] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink." 9:14 But they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [upon all of them]. 9:15 And He does not fear the consequence thereof. Translation by Sahih International

Lebanon
Born 1988 in Nashville, Tennessee Currently working from my atelier in Beirut, Lebanon since 2011, I continue to pursue my education and understanding of Islamic Art and calligraphy. Working in the Diwani, Diwani Jali and square Kufic scripts, I use the words to create illustrations ranging from portraits to geometric abstract constructions. The work celebrates Middle Eastern and Islamic culture in addition to focusing on human rights in the post colonial era, with an emphasis on American and western foreign policy. With few calligraphers who use their words to illustrate rather than write, my greatest inspiration comes from Jila Peacock, and Hassan Musa. My aim is to eventually achieve the flawless legibility of Peacock's work while also grasping the visual accuracy with which Hassan Musa illegibly creates his animals and figures, using shapes and strokes inspired by calligraphy. As nearly all of the original work has been sold. I'm primarily selling limited edition facsimile giclee prints, on Saatchi, particularly only those in which at least half of the edition has already been sold.
