About The Artwork

„Just do it/ Tito – That’s Us“ Mionica is a tiny town situated in western Serbia, 100 km away from Belgrade. Every year the Relay of Youth Baton used to pass through this small place on its route through Yugoslavia. Not long ago, I accidentally heard the following anecdote related to the Relay of Youth Baton passing through Mionica. The “incident” happened in the 1980s - On its way from Ljig to Valjevo, the Relay Baton would pass through Mionica. First, it would arrive in a car just outside the town, and then it would be picked up and carried though the main street by selected young runners. The runners would exchange approximately every 200 meters. Once the Baton reached a rather small industrial area, it would be handed off to selected, exemplary young people employed with one of very prosperous plants of that time “Krušik – Precision Casting”, „Metal Mionica“, „Fima“, „Mladost“ etc. ) That year everything was following the well-established protocol, runners took turns before entering the town … However, one of the runners, employed with “Metal” at that time, had his own perception of the Relay of Youth – instead of running his 200 meter’s leg carrying the Baton in a ceremonial manner and according to the protocol, trying to make his “run” last as long as possible, he took the Baton and made the best efforts to run his leg, the next one and the one after that as fast as he could! Namely – this young man believed this entire event was a sports competition! Thus it happened that instead of having a parade and people celebrating along the main street and a formal entertainment being delivered over the public address system while TV Belgrade and TV Valjevo were making reports about the Baton’s itinerary though the towns of Yugoslavia which were to be broadcast later that evening, all they saw was the Baton rushing through the tiny town of Mionica with the speed of light. All this would not have been so dramatic if Mionica were not so small a town and the entire Baton parade route had not been only 1,000 meters long; this means that if this young man ran very fast, the entire event must have lasted shorter than it had been planned! Rumor has it that they barely managed to catch up with him at “Valjevo Road” and take the Baton away from him …
