I have been living in London for the past four years, after moving from Surrey, to study Fine Art. Following a foundation year at Chelsea College of Art in 2010, I have now graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London, with a First Class Honours degree. My show was reviewed by Theresa Kneppers leading to my work being featured in July's edition of 'Goop' and I am delighted to have been selected as one of their "13 Rising Art Stars". My practice reflects upon the continuum of art history from the sacred sublime to minimalist modernism, through formal decisions relating to materiality, composition and subtle gesture. The reverential atmosphere present in De-Light is met through potent material choice and the influence of monumentalism. The work explores a builder's alchemy, as it simultaneously lends itself to notions of art history combined with architecture. The space is designed to create a sensation within the viewer - a feeling of weight and oppression juxtaposed with the serenity of light. Formal decisions such as the sunken floor tile and the protruding concrete wall block suggest a dichotomy with gravity. Neither of these objects are quite 'perfect', as they fail to fulfil the practical builder's purpose. Instead, their redundancy becomes something to be worshipped and enjoyed. Architectural and historical considerations have led to a work that speaks of a joyful failure as my practical application and presence has developed a feminine contradiction against the masculinity of my chosen material.
