A new interpretation of Andy Warhol's portrait of Jackie Kennedy. This painting began by simply recreating the work; red background, silkscreened image, hand painting, silk screened again. Then came came the evolution of creating a work that deviates from the original while still exploring shared themes of the two works. The white halftone dots act as a veil hiding the true subject and the perceived subject. The veil is a symbolic of media portrayal. Jackie Kennedy was at the forefront of the dawning of the celebrity media age and having a fashionable first lady at the helm of the attention legitimized such pursuits by news outlets as well as typical Americans. Gold leaf is shattered and flecked across her hair symbolic of the assassination that was a shattering of an important era for America, the death of an icon and the vast things the Kennedy family meant to the world at large.

Alexander Key is an emerging contemporary artist from Charlotte, North Carolina. His work appropriates a wide variety of cultural ephemera, extracting familiar aesthetics and re-contextualizing them into new compositions that act as bittersweet commentaries. Mining from the resonance of childhood images and personal nostalgia, he explores the impact of these mental keepsakes on a broader collective memory. Working primarily in the medium of silkscreen printing, his work ranges from monotone prints to densely layered paintings. Please reach out if you are interested in showing his work or want to know more about his artistic practice.
