About The Artwork

Acrylic and Pigments on Canvas. From the series 'TEN BILLION LIGHT YEARS IN DIAMETER', MUSEO DE ARTE DE PUERTO RICO, RJ REYNOLDS GALLERY-8/16/2012-12/16/12 "A QUESTION THAT CERTAINLY COMES TO MIND AT THIS POINT, ESPECIALLY AFTER CONSIDERING THAT THESE WORKS COMPOSED OF COLORED POINTS SEEM INSISTENTLY SIMILAR TO MICROBIOLOGICAL CULTURES, AND THAT THE ARTIST HAS DEVISED TITLES BY REFERENCING TERMS FROM ASTROPHYSICS, IS WHETHER THEY ARE IN FACT ABSTRACT. THE QUESTION CEASES TO BE RHETORICAL THE MINUTE WE CAN ISOLATE CLEAR EVIDENCE OF ANY “DETECTABLE ENVIRONMENT.” HOWEVER, UNLIKE ABSTRACT ART—WHETHER RIGOROUSLY GEOMETRIC, PLATONIC, LYRICAL OR GESTURAL—FRENCH’S PAINTINGS ALWAYS SEEM TO BE GROUNDED IN SOME ORGANIC REALITY. THEY POINT INEVITABLY TO AN OBJECT, AND ARE THUS SIGNS OF SOME EXISTING FORM, EVEN IF WE DO NOT IMMEDIATELY PERCEIVE IT. DESPITE THE FREEDOM WITH WHICH THE OBJECT HAS BEEN EXPRESSED—NOT BY LITERALLY COPYING IT, BUT BY INTERPRETING OR EVEN INVENTING IT—SOMETHING ALREADY EXISTING IS NONETHELESS INDICATED. AS WITH HIS PLANTS AND FLOWERS, FRENCH DOES NOT SIMPLY IMITATE THE CONSTELLATIONS. INSTEAD HE INVENTS, RECREATES, AND IMAGINES THEM. HIS RECENT WORKS DRAW UPON THE LATEST PHOTOGRAPHY OF OUTER SPACE. THESE IMAGES OFFER AN EXTRAORDINARY PANORAMA OF UNUSUAL COLORS AND FORMS THAT ARE QUITE DIFFERENT FROM WHAT WE OBSERVE OF THE HEAVENS WITH THE NAKED EYE. BASED ON THIS EVIDENCE, THE ARTIST’S INTERPRETATIONS OF THE UNIVERSE MAY SERVE AS A HARBINGER FOR THE ASTOUNDING IMAGES THAT WE WILL SEE IN THE FUTURE”. Juan Carlos López Quintero Catalog ‘Ten Billion Light Years In Diameter’ Curator, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, 2012

ERIC HAYDEN FRENCH CIRCUNS 2021 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grantee/ b. 1969 Peru, Indiana. Eric French earned his Bachelor’s Degree in 1994 from the School of Fine Arts and Design in San Juan, Puerto Rico and his Master’s Degree in 1996 from the Savannah College of Arts and Design in Savannah Georgia. French found in formal higher education the disciplined approach to base his artworks in the research on a particular subject. He studies composition and how the art fundamentals affect its content while altering the visual outcome. French’s paintings and drawings depict the deep love and understanding of color theory that the artist developed as a young student. From the expressive gestures in his abstractions to an even more precise approach in his geometry, his confident, strong strokes and use of color serve as a conductive thread within his open style approach to making art. Recent exhibitions include Expanding Universe at the Ángel Ramos Foundation’s SalaFar in San Juan Puerto Rico, Ten Billion Light Years in Diameter in the RJ Reynolds Gallery at the Museum of Art of Puerto Rico and Pieces of Heaven an Art of Elysium & Christies Charitable Art Auction & Exhibition, at the Ace Museum in Los Angeles, California. His work is featured in private and public collections nationally and internationally including the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, California, the Museum of Art of Puerto Rico and the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Eric French lives and works in San Juan and is a Professor of Visual Arts in the School of Fine Arts and Design and in the University of Puerto Rico.
