This is the epitome of the structural form I am transfixed by in nature. It is literally the horn of a mountain sheep, also known as Argali. I decontextualize the horn, turning it upright and dressing it in vivid hues, to celebrate its beautiful structure and nothing more. What primarily attracts me in these forms is their static dynamism contained within their contortions, twists, folds, or modular sequences. Appearing almost like flash frozen liquids, these structures describe flowing trajectories through space and time which captivate my eye and imagination. Thus in my paintings, in order to accentuate these attributes, I am focusing on three elements: value differences between lights and darks to distinguish shape; saturated, bright colors to make the structures more arresting and alien; and airy atmospheres which decontextualize the subject matter. As a smaller but supporting effect, I employ mysterious or exaggerated reflected light in order to "sculpt" facets that might normally be, quite literally, overshadowed. This kind of recontextualizing is partly a satisfying of my creative impulse to explore color and construct an imagined image, but more importantly it serves to highlight the physical structures of the subject matter. I want to separate these items from their familiar contexts, such as the head of a ram or the orienting power of an earthen ground, so that the viewing mind will not reflexively and summarily categorize the object and so preclude a more focused scrutiny. Thus the spiralizing ram horns and serpentine branchings are dressed in vivid magentas, turquoises, bright greens and oranges, and reoriented in hazy atmospheres in which up and down, top and bottom, root and crown are unclear. In this sense, in contrast to how we are often desensitized to the familiar, I wish to resensitize viewers to the amazing structures commonly surrounding us. Through these alterations, a greater appreciation is afforded the forms, a more visceral comprehension of their energy, which is what I am most interested in, and whose beauty I wish to highlight.
