About The Artwork
2008 oil on canvas Project Mixed Beliefs It is an investigation of the strength of certain images and symbols to generate the mystical, spiritual and the collective identity. I have appropriated different imaginaries transforming them with a lighter look, merging them from thoughts and personal experiences to erase borders. Among the appropriated imaginaries there are symbolisms of the West, Asia and the Middle East like textile designs, calligraphy and illustration. Starting from the open appropriation of decorative aesthetics and of its transformation into pictorial qualities uncomfortably smooth, questioning the taboo of the decorative in the arts. By working the imaginaries in fragments that juxtaposed, I also elude to the juxtaposition of doctrines and cultures.

Monterrey- Mexico 1979 I use my creative process to restructure and question my beliefs and to observe how they relate to my surroundings. I often think of all the overlapping ideas cohabiting out there and in our brain, some of them contradicting. Through my art I try for these ideas to coexist gracefully relating them subtly. I rely in ornament as a cultural container and symbols may appear to play a role in reference making. In my work, titles are an important part of the idea and there is lots of detail. I also work from thematic projects composed of a small number of pieces and I like to demolish frontiers between beliefs. I may now and then explore new media and materials that come my way but never leave aside drawing, collage, cutout and paint.
