About The Artwork

This piece is part of the Reflecting/Reflected series on female artistic contemplation. Each element of the composition was handled differently, from the quick black brushwork of the gesso table to the pastel eye and Cezanne-esque paint handling of the outside foliage. The rectangular shape of the giant leaf acts as foil to the rectangle of the window as I contemplate the acts of framing/cropping and inside/outside. The hands were inspired by a collaboration between Man-Ray and Picasso. The diagonal, downward perspective and unusual sense of scale come from my love of Francis Bacon and my renewed interest in surrealism.

www.hazelthepainter.com /// @hazelthepainter /// Hazel Miller’s paintings feature lush botanical life, statuesque figures, and wild animals and insects. Her work demonstrates an interest in the overlapping fields of natural history and art history. Themes of her work range from impermanence and spirituality to metaphysics and deep time. Miller's paintings are characterized by imaginative color palettes and a close attention to brushstroke textures. Her most prominent stylistic inspirations include Modernist experiments in semi-abstraction and sumi-e painting methods and philosophy. Originally from San Antonio, TX (b. 1993), Miller now calls Spokane, WA her home. She graduated from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2016 (Rose City Scholarship) and is a recipient of an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant (2018). Miller had her first solo show, “The Black Universe” in 2021 at Terrain Gallery in Spokane, WA. NOTE: Most large paintings are shipped rolled in a tube, but many can be stretched and shipped in a box or crate upon request. Please inquire about specific piece for more info.
