Art Description

Painting: Oil on Wood.

Size: 27.6 H x 27.6 W x 1.2 in

The central element of the composition are the hands and their gestures. The hand talks about the people, about their character. My personal thoughts about the "Italian project" started with the study of hands by Raffaello di Bartolomeo so-called Raffaellino del Garbo (1470-1512), where the human character is "portrayed" by hands. This characterisation by gestures gets to a climax in Caravaggio's painting entitled "The Call of Saint Matthew" (1599-1600). Here the characters are in action, each in their place. The only person whose hands are deliberately invisible is the girl on the left,as if she has been grown from flowers, or flowers from herself, impartial and detached from the polar world.
