This painting was the first in a series of fictional portraits designed to be shown in Poland. The series references international displacement and ownership by indirectly quoting Leonardo da Vinci’s Lady with Ermine which resides in Kracow. The original subject of Leonardo's painting was the mistress of the Duke of Milan who commissioned the work. The image boasts his ownership of her, the Ermine a symbol of here exclusive faithfulness. Aside from the Madonna of Czestochowa, Leonardo’s portrait is arguably the most famous painting in Poland. Poles claim this painting as a national icon in the much of their tourist literature, regardless of its Italian origin. The painting was stolen during the Nazi occupation, and its return after World War II has solidified the sense of this painting as Polish national property. If all history and context were forgotten, we would assume this is a portrait of a woman and her pet. The sitters in my own works echo Leonardo’s Lady. Unlike her ermine, actual animals are referenced and are portraits in their own right. In this case, my mother's cat was used. Oil on canvas, ready to hang with exposed 1.5 inch gallery-wrapped edges.
