About The Artwork

This linear, abstract painting is made of hundreds of layers in oil and high melt waxes. The warmed neutral golden hues contrast restfully with sensual blues & blue greens, which suggest a horizon with sea and sky when hung (as shown) vertically. On the Horizon, is also recto-verso, or may be hung horizontally. It was painted in the round, to be seen sculpturally. The sophisticated stripes in sumptuous oil in high-melt waxes invite the hand to feel the smooth, highs and lows of the surface and embrace pure abstraction. This (54 x 40") painting on panel floats away at a 4" diagonal panel to the wall. Oil, Oil in high-melt wax that has been buffed smooth, and acrylic on wood panel have created the sculptural mood for this soothing painting. This piece was made for myself and I have only now decided to offer it for sale. It is sculptural, on wood panel, with 4” deep sides are at a 45 degree angle toward the wall, so the painting appears to float. The sides are paint with the composition, so it is also sculptural when seen from the side (framing is not suitable).

Washington, USA. 1964. Claremont Graduate University, MFA; Painting & Sculpture, Claremont, Ca., Washington State University, BFA; Art and Architecture Kerwin lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work resides in the spontaneously perceptive areas of proportion and measurements found in a lineage including Reinhardt, McGlaughlin, Agnes Martin and her own. Kerwin’s geometric abstraction, with an emphasis on color harmonies and balance, takes a new beat with each exhibition. Kerwin uses a variety of media to achieve her goals for each painting, which include: oil, oil in high melt waxes, and acrylic. These paintings have been called by critics in L.A. "sexy", "passionate", and "surfaces to dream on". Her work has been in over 110 exhibitions and is collected internationally. *Occasionally, while making her geometric abstractions, cows may leap out, and some are pictured here. Kerwin’s early years were spent on an expansive, wilderness cattle ranch in the Olympic mountains of Washington state, USA.
