underlying paint gilded acrylic, surface paint oil and acrylic on a wooden panel. framed. the image is of two wagtails brought into the house by the cats and which were perfect specimens to paint from as cats have a way of killing their prey without damaging it. the painting eludes to the 8th elegy by rainer maria rilke. In his poem rilke refers to the human state of mind that is fully conscious of its own impending death, whereas the animal knows nothing of its future, therefore, unfailingly looking forward out from the shadow into the light... the free creature has its progress always behind it, and god before it, and when it moves, it moves in eternity, as streams do.
