About The Artwork

My work is an exploration of the everyday preconceptions that surround Britain's working class society and the reality of it. In my work I am highlighting the everyday and how ambiguity can change the perception of a narrative. I am inspired by the everyday scenes of the average working class estate. Growing up on a council estate myself I wish to share my experience of this using a visual representation to render an element of mystery. My art represents conflicting views between the stereotypical thoughts of Britain's working class within council estate areas. In my pursuit of representing contemporary society, I am interested in the stigma surrounding the council estate environment. Television, newspapers, and other media, even political sources can influence the perceptions of council estates. By introducing an ambiguous narrative within my paintings, the sense of the unknown allows viewers to create their own stories surrounding the paintings. Whether they have previously seen this type of area first hand or even through the media, they are able to draw on their past experiences to conjure their own ideas as to what the image portrays. Because of the varied and individualised experiences of the viewers, this will be interpreted in many different ways. This can result in a negative or positive outlook. I am influenced by artists such as George Shaw and his paintings of his childhood neighbourhood in Coventry. I am also inspired by works by Edward Hopper and his approach to composition that has a sense of theatricality. I create almost a theatrical scene within my paintings to pose as a narrative that deals with negative preconceptions which are often associated with working class areas and council estates throughout Britain. In my paintings I utilise this general consensus and insert further ambiguity by displaying an unexplainable scene. I use the process of photography to gain a basis for my paintings. I look closely at the compositional elements of the environment and carefully compose my scenes using the "rule of thirds" in order to balance these elements of the paintings. I create a narrative in my paintings to intentionally convey the themes I wish each painting to embody with the intention to produce a believable scene that mirrors reality. This series of paintings provides me with an opportunity to express my own experiences of growing up in this environment. Although these scenes may initially be met with negative perceptions, everything is not always what it appears to be. In fact sometimes, what can first appear to be negative can turn out to be completely innocent or even positive behaviour
