About The Artwork

The vital cycle of a can This series focuses on the object of cans. Cans are typically colorful objects, created beautifullly to attract the interest of the consumer. As many other objects, once they are used they become waste and are treated as such: cans are destroyed and thrown away. During a vist to a Recycling factory in Salzburg on summer 2009, I became fascinated about the tones of cans piled as mountains that are recovered from the city every year. The recycling process was amazing, allowing to recover and creating very efficiently new and fresh beautiful cans, leaving almost no waste unused. On this series I analysed this process from a can's life perspective. I thought about how many other objects are treated in a similar way, bringing me to connect to the idea of how humans could eventually be recycled if treated as objects.

Cristina Castañeda (1977) is a self taught artist from Barcelona (Spain). She started painting and creating as a child, becoming her favorite games and entertainment. Specially during holidays in the family's country's side house, she would spend hours playing with charcoals, acrylics and building little monsters with the raw clay grabbed directly from the mountains. Maybe that's the main reason why she still loves playing with materials and creating textures on her paintings. On her most recent works, she focuses on combining the gestural language of improvisational expressionism with reductive abstraction.
