About The Artwork

Where I live in South-West England the rivers break their banks each winter. This is why the county is called Somerset – the Land of the Summer People. In generations past, it was always too sodden in winter to sustain human habitation. In recent centuries technology was introduced to subdue and shape this natural process of annual inundation, and the floods were held back for a while. But now humankind’s attempts to control nature have, once again, been giving way to larger forces. To some people these annual floods represent devastation, while others welcome them as representing a new level of nature's creativity. These winter floods bring amazing diversity with them – diversity of species and environment, and also extraordinary visual diversity. Further evidence of our confused and troubled relationship with the nature that most closely surrounds us. I make my artworks with a camera yet I see them as closer to painting than to photography, carrying a different emotional charge, and extending a different tradition. I see my creative journey as being a tight manouevre through the gaps between painting, photography and the moving image. Much of my work is a response to the flowing narratives of nature, and to the wealth of languages that nature has developed which tell us its stories. Intentionally, my images slip and slide between the descriptive and the abstract, or what I prefer to think of as the concentrated. I seek to excite in the viewer a sense of attention, provoking thoughts and feelings that encourage a curiosity about what is around them, what they are part of, what lies beyond the visible. This work is priced as a print on rag paper or cotton fabric. For an increased cost of 15pc it can be printed onto silk, and for an increased cost of 25pc can be printed directly onto aluminium, mounted on a subframe. Other sizes are available on request.

ARTIST CURATOR. I work as an artist curator, minus the hyphen. I attempt to balance both roles: seeking the concentration and focus of making images, objects and installations that are directed at the individual viewer; embracing the collaborative and enabling task of shaping exhibitions and events that are created in the company of others. As an artist, I work invariably with a high definition camera, but my intention is to reach beyond the image - towards the making of an effective and affective object, perhaps even an experience. Inevitably, this leads me to explore both materials and the immaterial, scale and the use of space. As well printing on art paper, I print onto aluminium, acetate and fabric, especially linen and cotton. When appropriate, I like to let the prints hang freely, unmounted and unframed, so they can respond reflexively to movements in the air. And I use translucency to animate the prints further, as they alter their appearance in response to changes in the light. Although these frequently large prints are at the centre of my output, recent exhibitions have included video projections, sound installations and handmade books, or booklike objects. Making books as been an interest for a long time, but now it is moving towards the centre of my output, as a complement to the translucent prints As a curator, I seek to create exhibitions that both generate and contribute to conversations, that cross boundaries and widen horizons. In addition to visual artists, my exhibitions often include contributions from performers, using movement, music, words and ideas. At present I am getting great pleasure from working with poets. I think poetry and visual art -both of them elusive and allusive media- can become great companions.
