About The Artwork

Peter Rodger Limited Edition (50) part of the Cheeky series photographed at the Taj Mahal, India in 2004. Signed on front under image with edition number. I had been doing nudes in public places all over the world. The rules were no retouching! That meant that they all had to be done for real. The Taj Mahal was built in 1632 by Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, to house the tomb of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. She was known as an amazing beauty so this image is a homage to her and the effect she had on her husband; a beautiful woman inspiring a beautiful building to immortalize her forever. It was hard to shoot as the authorities would find nudity rather disrespectful (It is now a Muslim shrine). But for me, a nude in the grounds of this beautiful place is an act of respect. We had to wait for a long long time as there were guards all over the place and although we arrived at 6.30 am to achieve this, there were tourists in droves from dawn onward. Patience. Then there was the call to prayer. The model was wearing a sarong. The guards went off to pray and miraculously all the Japanese and Chinese tour groups disappeared. I screamed, "now". The model pulled the sarong in front of her, hiding it. I took one frame on a Fuiji 6X4.5 film camera using Tri-X Black and white film, and then screamed "RUN!" We ran. I don't think anyone noticed. If anyone could ever be offended by this, my only answer would be "how could you be offended by showing God's work in the beauty of a body in the grounds of such a beautiful man-made homage to love?" I would hope they could agree.

Peter Rodger grew up looking through a camera lens. As a teenager, the award-winning British director and photographer honed his skills by assisting his father, George Rodger, the renowned photojournalist and co-founder of Magnum Photos. But it wasn’t until he spent a summer in Paris working for Henri Cartier Bresson that the true love of photography started to take hold. Everywhere he went he took a camera - a trait still true today. Capturing moments, and telling a story in a frame became a passion. After completing his education at England's Maidstone College of Art, Peter’s skill with the lens made him one of the most sought-after talents in both the European and United States advertising markets. He has shot print and commercial campaigns in over sixty-three countries and still does so today. Peter has exhibited his fine art all over the world, and has won numerous awards for both his photography and motion work.
