About The Artwork

Pinhole photography, - exposure time as long as the opers, 4,5 hours ----------- Karen Stuke has always wanted to engage in the other, an absolute theater photography. In other words, an image which unites everything, the entire scene, the entire act, the entire program. Thus she inevitably came to the camera obscura, an anachronistically slow instrument, which allows just such a view and with which she is meanwhile so intimate that she doesnt even consider it anything special so masterly is her perfection of this tool. The images she records with it are different this much is irrefutable. Whether they are proper and correct is unverifiable. They are the visible expression of a deep desire to respond to the extravagant world of the theatre with extravagant photographic images. Her production is doubled and even tripled. The artist responds to the production on stage with the production of the camera, which follows the production of the image in stagelike boxes. A new system of images is created. (Gottfried Jäger from the book: The Trilogy of time, or: I dont mind waiting!)

lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Karen Stukes photographs leave space for a lot of associations. First of all there is the light. Light allows us to perceive scenarios that take place in the dark. Photographs are light pictures. Light is the essence of photography, its actual medium. But for Stuke light is more than just a medium, it is the subject of photography as well. Then her photos are defined by space. They engage with spaces and are created within them. A third factor that characterises her pictures is the movement. This appears fleetingly, and is not registered in the single decisive moment of a photographic shot, but holistically and with temporal duration.Hours go by while the camera obscura gradually collects and saves the images of darkness. Only towards morning will its intimate view be terminated, as day breaks. What remains are slow, peaceful pictures on the border between closeness and distance, between day and dream.
