About The Artwork

The element of creating controversial issues within a photograph is what draws the viewer into the image. This issue of ‘the designer baby’ has created huge debates about this concept of parents being able to choose the physical characteristics of their unborn baby such as eye and hair colour, which demonstrates this element of manufacturing their own children. By using an issue that can create a debate such as this one is able to create a big impact on to the audience, which is what makes an interesting image. Within this project by choosing to create one single photograph the combination of both image and text reflects the concept and shows this element of the controversial issue involved. The image itself adds this aspect of surrealism and constructed imagery. It is highly influenced by the work of Hannah Hoch who creates photomontages that are based on the Dada movement some of these include ‘Da Dandy, 1919’ and ‘the coquette, 1923-25’, however particular image ‘Cut with the Kitchen Knife through the Beer- Belly of the Weimar Republic, 1919’ is one of her most famous images and represents this idea of feminism which was certainly a very controversial subject in the 1920s as it was never heard of. This setup many issues and created an impact on the art world. The element of constructed imagery was important as all parts of this project is to link back to this concept and this is a strong example as this idea of construction relates to how genetics are being manipulated and constructed to create perfection. The photograph produced uses a combination of presenting this idea of ‘the designer baby’ being a manufactured object. Using this element of dolls in relation to the manufactured objects both creates a very surreal image but also adds to the concept of the image. Hans Bellmer was an influential artist especially for this particular part of the project as looking at the way he produced ‘the dolls’ it directly linked back to the images being produced and suggested how surrealism can be produced in this way. For the viewer to understand the issues that are confronted within this project many elements have been introduced such as the dolls, the combination of photographs and text but also where the dolls were photographed. They needed to be in relation to the environment of a baby for example by using a babies room, the mobile over the cot and also using toys such as the letter blocks to add the text element to the photograph. The constructed image is a component that is important to this project by looking at the work of Gabriel Orozco he demonstrates how important the construction with in the concept is. He takes this idea of making everyday objects become of symmetry of what reality is in relation to different perspectives and viewpoints. When looking at Gabriel Orozco ‘Isla en la Isla (Island within an Island)’ this image demonstrates the basis of what he is exploring within all of this work and he became an influence on how the constructed image works and how it can relate to the present project. It was important as part of this project to make an impact on to the audience so by producing only one image this would stop the distraction of going from one image to the next. Also the build up of layers adds to the element of construction but also creates this interesting and complex photograph.
