About The Artwork

Description: Desmond Tate

Examines the western art establishment historically, including imperialist processes he investigates the influences on contemporary art and social structures, which he conveys through specific communicative processes. The work exhibited concentrates on the role of slavery in the construction and housing of our national treasures. He employs strong classical references, which have little personal significance; through pursuing western classical forms he deliberately alienates himself from his culture and history.

Institutions of modern art marginalize Third World artists and imperial/capitalism plays an integral part in that marginalization. Through this process black artists in Britain have beco

Artists statement
Over a period of several years I have developed a body of work that has a great emphasis on accessibility/formal/sculptural/contextual; the works have been documented and examine the influences of my earlier works on my current practice as my work can only be deciphered in its entirety chronologically.

In a shifting world of information and counter misinformation, confusing multiple levels of garbled manipulation, the core of my work aims to demystifying the complexities within our socio-economic and political environments, through investigating specific influences on the human condition.

The methodology within my practice is one of autonomy the amalgamation of artistic formal methods as well as the critical investigation of art within the global socio-economic system, e.g. artists are repetitively marketed in relation to a familiar piece of work an easily recognizable product, which is distributed to a global art market. Formal diversity is one of the central elements of my practice from the figurative form to the abstract from architecture to animation diversity allows controls over being marketed in relation to an individual recognizable piece.

Regardless of what layer of information we chose to accept or hide behind we cannot deny our global reality only ignore it.

The artists work covers a wide range of enquiry: economic systems which govern our lives, artistic autonomy, extending the ongoing theories / variations which continually shift with economic forces within art institutions and private galleries. Economic controls which manipulate artistic production, value, validation and public perception of art / artists are referenced within the artists work and theoretical studies. The artist aims to maintain full economic control over his work.
The use of different names is used by the artist as well, creating racial diversity, allowing investigation of various issues in relation to the pseudonyms employed.

My intention is to look at just one aspect of the artists work. The artist casts a critical eye on the paradigm of economic / social infrastructure of the Western World.
