About The Artwork

These graphics are talking about the passing of the material world, always-present shadow of death, old age, loneliness, resources are depleted, the time has expired (the empty swimming pools), but the endless blue and the door will open when the time comes, give hope for a transition to another metaphysical dimension. It is a cycle of 6 graphics, made in traditional graphic multi-coloured linocut, titled "In Expectation" Each print was printed on 10 print sheets, so a total of 60 print sheets were printed in graphics workshop on an old hand press. The prints were printed off 3 matrices – linocut Paper Fabriano Artistico 200 g. dimension of paper 560x760 mm. Some reviews of my work: OPEN VERNISSAGE 2009 Tendencies … …The questioning of aesthetic-visual artistic values is visible in the works of Bratelj Dora …For Dora Bratelj one can say that, apart from the fine colourism, her work reminds of hyper-realism of Cottingham and Estes, where the objects of urban day-to-day life become the medium for both the aesthetic and the symbolic, while the apparent insignificance of the portrayed objects, which can hardly be called the motifs of a painting, presents a special atmosphere and the spirit of the duration, which is then recognized as the real theme of the painting. At the same time, the attention to details in shaping these “insignificant objects”, just like with the American hyperrealists, reveals a dose of surrealism, not due to the selection and collage of motifs, but due to the sensitized atmosphere of the portrayed. IVA PAPIĆ, B.A. Art History Presentation of the print portfolio “Selected Authors of the 5th Croatian Triennial of Graphic Art” … Was the closing ceremony that marked the celebration of half a century of the continuity of prints exhibitions in Zagreb, which was started and continuously organized by the Printmaking Department of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU). The selection was based on the authors who cannot be left out, renowned masters who developed their expression by deeply entering into the essence of the metier/intaglio, relief, flatbed and screen printing/ for generations. From the lucid inventiveness of Ivan Kožarić, to the almost metaphysical landscape of Dora Bratelj…. …What they all have in common is their distinctiveness in the context of the Croatian graphic art scene. It is joined with our editions which will, over time, contribute to a recognizable series, understood also in the broader context of the European graphic art. Slavica Marković, M.Sc., Director of the Printmaking Department of Croatian Acasemy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU)
