CHRISTOPHER NEWMAN (b. 1970, Port Macquarie, Australia) Printmedia artist/ printmaker and Graphic Designer, Newman studied at UTS (University of Technology, Sydney) attaining a Bachelor of Design (Visual Communication), studied printmaking at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney (Printmedia), and Wollongong University's Faculty of Creative Arts, from where he obtained his Masters. He is currently also training at COFA (College of Fine Arts), UNSW (University of NSW). His technique reflects this substantial training. Recent significant artistic milestones include two very successful art residencies and exhibitions in Paris and in Buenos Aires, the former at Proyecto'Ace in Buenos Aires, the later at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. Newman been selected for prestigious art awards and prizes such as the International Print Triennial - Krakow, Fremantle Print Awards, Albury Art Prize, Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award, National Print Prize Australia and has been shown and collected by the Australian Embassy in Buenos Aires, purchased by Tweed River Gallery, Australia, in private collections in Australia and overseas. Newman has also worked for many years as a graphic designer and art director for various magazines and newspapers, such as art-directing Australian T3 magazine and graphic design in the art department for The Daily Telegraph and The Australian newspapers. He has worked as a compositor and line-tester in the animation industry in Australia and in London, on various animated ABC and BBC television series and on the animated Australian feature film, The Magic Puddding. Clem Gorman wrote in a review of his exhibition "La cara terrestre: Argentina" in Buenos Aires: "Newman states, in his program notes: "My art is a tool for revival of nature and tradition, a plea for humans to live in harmony with the land, and to identify the transient Outsider's relationship with urbanity." The exhibition is called La Cara Terrestre: Argentina (the "˜alien' face in the land: Argentina), and depicts, he says: "sometimes my own transient face into the scene ... (or) other faces, faces in the urban jungle ... alienated from nature.
