About The Artwork

This is a piece from my final year project in college titled "Leadership". Leadership can be physical or mental and can lead towards peace, faith in some cases but often to disaster. For example in this piece we can see how people are gathering around the Minara which symbolizes the Kaba, the house of God. Instead of worshiping 'God', they are caught in worshiping a man made structure, a man made religion. These followers are blindly following with no individual questioning. The followers then become fanatic and judgmental which leads to separation.

I was born In South Kurdistan (Northern Iraq) in 1980, the same year the war started between Iran and Iraq. As a child I lived with a strong military presence in my homeland and endured frequent aerial bombing. Growing up, I saw many people die and experienced the full savagery of war and Genocide. In 1991, following The Kurdish Uprising, my family migrated over the Iranian border, travelling on foot through the mountains for 26 Days. Later as a student of the Erbil College of Fine Art (1998-2002) I used Art to voice my opinion on Human Rights and other controversial Issues. In 2005, I approached the Minister of Culture of the Kurdish government, Iraqi Region, with the proposal to open a new gallery in Erbil City, ''Palace Gallery'', which I was given the approval to build, and which I ran for its first year. In addition to this I was also managing a Kurdish Artist group show for a four month period which encompassed several cities in southern Kurdistan. I have written articles about art history and critiques which were published in newspapers, art and art literature magazines, such as: Shaker (avant garde), Aynda(future), Shewakari(visual art), Hunari New(modern art), Guna and various newspapers. I was also editor of the Hunari New, which is a modern Art magazine. I arrived In Ireland in 2007 continuing my artistic studies at The Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (2009-2014). My current Primary Media are painting and Installation with supporting instances of video and Printmaking. My current work focuses on the Subjects of Genocide, War, Violence and Man’s Inhumanity. The very recent Collection entitled The Story of Sand specifically deals with The ANFAL Genocide carried out under The Iraqi Regime in The South of Kurdistan (Northern Iraq) between 1986 and 1988, resulting in the deaths of over 182,000 civilian Kurdish people, many having been buried alive.
