About The Artwork

This print installation, created in the earthy browns/ layers/ ochres (22 part installation/ serigraphy on hand-made Aboriginal paper) presents the hard-work, hard training, the burning out of desire, the struggle to reach enlightenment through hard training/ meditation in motion (Shaolin Monk Kung Fu), emphasised by the pyramid and the top being the attainment of goals/ enlightenment. In Buddhism, Buddhahood is the state of perfect enlightenment. The work came from a series of print works from 2013 which examined Shaolin Monk Kung Fu in a material/ contemporary world and theoretical terrains such as – Chan (Zen) Buddhism, Capitalism/ materialism, displacement/ alienation. Qigong, chi kung, or chi gung; literally "Life Energy Cultivation") is a practice of aligning breath, movement, and awareness for exercise, healing, and meditation. From a philosophical perspective qigong is believed to help develop human potential, allow access to higher realms of awareness, and awaken one's "true nature". People practice qigong for many different reasons, including for exercise and recreation, prevention and self-healing, meditation and self-cultivation, and training for martial arts. Shaolin Kung Fu is most famous for its animal styles and imitation styles. The most famous of the Shaolin techniques is the five animals. The Snake, Dragon, Crane, Tiger and Leopard make up this system. Each animal displays a certain characteristic throughout the forms. Chan Buddhism is Chinese, derived like all Buddhism from Hinduism, and the inspiration for Japanese Zen. Buddhists advocate personal salvation rather than the affairs of society. They seek to break the cycle of suffering by eliminating desire.
