About The Artwork

My endeavors to do something in time may bring about lots of anxieties. And, I am dragged to an unexpected direction while facing unfamiliar everyday aspects in a clumsy manner. I try to stay in a specific place to resist such dragging. A reconstructed or rediscovered space becomes an object of aspiration when filled with timid defiance. This space, however, does not always remain still or move more slowly than reality for me. I rather reach a space completely different from this at some moment, jumping over several stages. I feel embarrassed about this situation that generates lyric anxiety in my work. I am doubtful about the reality in which I am forced to select something as an ambiguous boundary. At this moment disquieting factors in the future or the past are in my conscious or unconscious, making deep or shallow wounds on the surface of the present. However, the term “anxiety” is not always negative. To borrow words of Fritz Riemann, German psychologist, I receive an impression that anxiety has dual aspects, when observing “anxiety without anxiety”. Anxiety makes us active, and paralyzed in a sense. Anxiety is always a sign and a warning signal, but simultaneously has the character of a sort of suggestion, that is, the strength to overcome it. (Grundformen der Angst by Fritz Riemann.) As he says, anxiety has negative and positive aspects simultaneously. He claims that our effort to escape from a situation can be the possibility of oneself and the society we belong to.

I try to show my cautiousness to survive in a disquieting reality and my effort to adapt myself to a surrounding environment through unfamiliar scenes and abstract things set intentionally. This is like a way to survive in a harsh environment as creatures learn how to disguise themselves for their survival. Diverse instable elements in life are like the role of fitting everyday fragments - trivial yet not to be taken lightly - into their right places. I endeavor to excavate and collect such images that remain like fossils between layers of time.
