Sculpture, Mixed Media on Other
Size: 35.4 W x 70.9 H x 35.4 D in
Breath incorporates key elements of this artist’s symbolic universe and on a number of levels. A red curtain that takes the sculptural form of a female figure advancing towards us through the void, with two pieces of melting ice in her hands. On an immediate level, the work provokes thought on the complex and delicate relationship between man and mother-nature, on the negative impact of man’s interaction with the biosphere, our source of energy and life. It is air itself, or maybe lack of it, that the title “Breath” alludes to. Like water, it is an element very close to the artist’s sensibility because it can be both soft and caressing but also a violent, mutable generator of form. At a deeper level, the work creates a palpable dialogue between presence and absence. The motion of the drapery, as if underscoring the mark man leaves, too often unconsciously, on the environment, delineates a female identity, a leit motif throughout Ciriaca+Erre’s art.
