Meinbert Gozewijn van Soest, born 1964 in Alkmaar, Netherlands
"Then We said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; (-) So We created man in Our own image, in the image of Us We created him; male and female We created them." Meinbert Gozewijn van Soests series of drawings entitled Trophy Heads was created from photos, downloaded at random via search terms CEO, chairman and president. The works are not portraits of a person, but portraits of the photograph, of the image. The title Trophy Heads refers to the tradition in some ancient cultures to keep safe the head of an enemy or beloved ancestor, regarding it as an object with magical properties. As a follow-up Meinbert Gozewijn van Soest is working on a series of studies, which are a further investigation into the re-creation of images or "imagoes". Imagoes as in 'stages of metamorphosis of an (idealized) image' of a person. In his drawings he approaches his subjects from inside, rather then exploring the supposed superficiality of the image.
Meinbert Gozewijn van Soest is educated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, Netherlands. His work has been presented in a variety of solo shows in the Netherlands, such as at RONMANDOS gallery, Amsterdam, the Kranenburgh Museum in Bergen, Artists Society de Kring in Amsterdam and at different ministries in the Hague. The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the DSM-Art Collection in Heerlen, the Teylers Museum in Haarlem and the Public Archive of Amsterdam have all acquired his work for their collections. In addition to this, Van Soest has worked as an illustrator for the Dutch Financial Daily from 2005 till 2009.,
