Xabier Agirre

In the paintings I aim to project a personal vision of the landscapes that I discover on my journeys. The natural landscapes recomposed and humanized by the action of mankind are the motifs of my pictorial proposals. The Sicilian land with its archaeological vestiges and dry plains allows me to employ highly saturated chromatic combinations. On the contrary, the green fields and rivers of the Basque Country encourage me to work in medium tones when addressing the water and its reflections, using a full palette of tints, hues and shades.
It is a way of painting which has to do with the place and the moment. The pictorial process allows me to evoke the poetry of the places, working in the spirit of plein air, but almost always based on photographic images taken by me. These images permit me each time to start the pictorial process, where the paint, rich in matter, leads me to the evocative construction of the spaces, beginning with the faithful reminder that the photographic device provides me.

Reverie, nostalgia and idealization can be the keys to understanding my work, an intended visual result, in pictorial code, highly coloured and richly expressive, aiming to convey the cleanest and purest aspects of the landscape.
