Hendricks was born in Detroit, and grew up on radical labor and civil rights politics; blues, jazz, soul, folk, rock; great lakes and the Diego Rivera dominated Detroit Institute of Art. He began oil painting at age nine. Subsequently he earned degrees in fine art and psychology. During the mid-seventies he arrived on the left coast from Ann Arbor Michigan. In San Francisco, Hendricks was intimately involved with early adaptation of innovations in public information, education, animation, web technology, and user-centered design. He has resided in Oakland for the past 25 years, where he continues to work in various media.
Over the past 40 years Hendricks has worked on his Five Decades project; an ongoing series of large-scale collages, each created at the end of the previous decade. This interwoven series forms a complex personal statement of his time. Together they draw a powerful line through a 50-year expanse of the past into the future.
