"DUET" 2015

Laura Elena Dumitru paints with acrylic on canvas or cardboard, creating a universe of contrived shapes that rather emerge from an inner reflection on human condition. Her characters do not seem to be based on live models, although somewhere in the background there is certainly a real-life inspiration. Some of the artist's compositions reveal her fascination with the universe of performing arts from which she draws dynamic portraits of performers: dancers and players. The continuous, unsteady motion of shapes, the impossibility of pinning them down in time and space, are exciting artistic pretexts for Laura Elena Dumitru. Other works capture on canvas portraits of young girls or women and the artist seems rather inclined to study their psychology and dynamics of feelings, as reflected by their faces and attitudes. The message that comes through from Laura Elena Dumitru's entire painting is a continuous suggestion of illusion.
