Stan Unser was born in Norfolk, Virginia in 1954 and lived most of his childhood in Minnesota. After two years of studying art and philosophy at Moorhead State College, Minnesota, his life was altered by the untimely death of a younger brother. Turning toward science, he received a MD degree from the University of Minnesota in 1982 using an Army scholarship. After completing his military career, he continued to give care and disability services to Wounded Warriors at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas until retiring his medical license in 2016.
He now takes classes at Southwest School of Art and teaches Mixed Media art classes for Adult Learning in Retirement at Northeast Independent School District in San Antonio. Stan’s work has received multiple local awards and is displayed by patrons in San Antonio, New Braunfels, Austin, and Houston. His present goals are to grow artistically, create engaging artwork, and broaden his partnership with the art community.
An enduring fasciation with intriguing images and a compulsion to merge them into stories directs my work. At inception the story is planned but it often evolves before completion. My focus is on presenting the narrative and artistic composition. I start with digital manipulation of the images before transferring them with acrylics and finishing with oils. Abstract or tumultuous environments are frequently opposed with organized figurative elements. I also welcome ambiguity to invite viewers to advance their own interpretation of the piece. Creating viewer involvement is my foremost purpose.
