Juliana Duque

My work shifts between the obvious as figurative and abstract passages as the unidentifiable. Through portraits and a diverse range of painterly methods, I explore the transience of our existence yet the complexity of our psyche, our emotions, memories and perception.

I create static portraits and deconstruct them by adding strokes, symbols or numbers and subtracting sections as a metaphor between past & present. Subjects are imbued with a contrast between reality and fiction that merges into the abstract. I use overlapping numbers and symbols such as scribbles and old sketches to depict memory, preservation and reconstruction through time.

Currently, I have been focused on exploring the flexibility of memory and how our memories change and adjust every time we bring them back. When the memory is created it is susceptible to the environment and the focus of attention that we have at the moment, while also being nurtured by our existing knowledge as well as adding information to it. We have units of information in our minds that help organize concepts, which help guide behavior and interpret reality.
