I was born in Sligo, Ireland in 1967. I now live with my family in South Bohemia, Czech but I also return regularly to Sligo to be with my father and to enjoy the Atlantic coastline. I paint in both locations. I have worked in over 30 countries overseas mostly in challenging emergency and humanitarian environments. I have had discs removed in my neck and lower back and due to nerve issues I must now paint with my right wrist and arm in a fixed brace. But painting is my physical and mental therapy and it gives me much joy to share my art with you.
I studied Civil Engineering in Galway (and MSc in England), ironically because I loved drawing and technical drawing was my favourite subject in school. For the next 20 years I worked globally in project management and in the development sector, but in many countries, I found time to paint. I painted water colours with an inspirational old artist on the hills of Nepal, I painted local scenes in oils when I lived in a village in rural West Africa and I painted the Kolkata skyline with pastels when living in India. All of this has influenced my current style with acrylics. Happy memories.
My style is influenced by artists whom I admire, such as The Hudson River School and their majestic American landscapes and European Artists of the same period before landscape painting and realism was deemed unfashionable. Thankfully that has changed. I think that wildlife artists kept the genre alive during the 20th century and they also inspire me greatly.
I have paintings permanently on display at the Cistercian Cloister in Vyssi Brod, where I sometimes also give tours to groups of foreign visitors.
I have paintings at Taylors gallery in Sligo, Ireland.
I have participated in group exhibitions including the Open Art Fest at the magnificent exhibition halls at Holešovice in Prague. I have also had exhibitions and presentations such as 'Hibernia to Bohemia' at the City Building in Budejovice which explored the connections from the Celts to the Early Christian Monasteries throughout Europe.
Connections are important to me. Although I can no longer work due to spine injuries, my life living and working in so many countries with wonderful people of varied cultures and traditions and faiths makes me who I am, and gives me inspiration for the future! Thank you for visiting my art page.
