Diāna Dzene is a figurative and landscape artist from Riga, Latvia, now based in Vienna, Austria.
She works in a slow, methodical, layered oil painting technique and is internationally recognised for her sense of light and colour.
An attentive observer of people, places and culture, Diāna is drawn to the stories that shape how we experience the world. Her inspiration comes from travel, history, architecture, cinema and everyday encounters that reveal unexpected meaning beneath the surface.
Whether exploring distance landscapes, personal transformation or family life, her artworks begin with curiosity. Through colour atmosphere and observation, she seeks to preserve moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed and to reveal the extraordinary within the ordinary.
Diāna’s work explores three recurring perspectives: Construction, Journeys and Family.
Diāna’s artistic journey began in childhood, painting over the basement walls of parents house, inspired by and copying old masters. As a teenager, Diāna studied porcelain painting under the mentorship of Dr. Inese Brants from the Academy of Arts in Latvia. During school, she considered joining the Academy of Arts of Latvia, however, her grandmother’s highly useful advice that “art won’t put bread on your table” led her to pursue a profession outside fine arts, and establish a career in the corporate world. However, one can't escape their passion, so Diāna continued to pursue art and its practice alongside a corporate career.
Diāna is a self-thought artist and furthered her art education with drawing and painting studies at the Academy of Arts of Latvia, University of the Arts in London – Central Saint Martins with Rodger Gill, and the Art Students League of New York with Peter Cox. Most recently, she completed a year-long apprenticeship with Valery Baida, a renowned artist focusing on impressionism technique in oil painting. Diāna creates her artwork daily at her studio in Vienna.
