Shepard's work is comprised of intense mark-making coupled with experientially collected photographic imagery. She works in a stream of consciousness fashion, deriving the inspiration for her process from surrealist and spiritualist notions of automatism. She is also heavily influenced by street art and graffiti and sees chance as a large part of her process. She sees the elemental scarification that occurs on a surface in a public space as a roadmap of experience or an archaeological record and seeks to reproduce similarly transformative processes both inside and outside of the studio. Shepard sees her work as journalistic in a sense, revealing unintended narratives unearthed from her subconscious and simultaneously reflecting the energy of the fleeting moment in time that is captured through the physical act of mark-making and allowing the process of making to guide the outcome. She has experimented with randomizing her decision-making process through the use of the I Ching- in experiments similar to those conducted by John Cage in his musical and visual art making.
