Yildiz Citci

My abstract works are synthesis of two opposite approaches: expressive approach (emotional) and geometric approach ( rational).

This synthesis started in 1984 with my abstract paintings on traditional rectangular canvas. It gained further dimension with the illusionary forms within the image on the canvas being developed as shaped canvases which can be exhibited on the walls and they continued to be transformed into sculptures with their painted edges. And following this addition of a third dimension, these illusional forms came into life as freestanding objects (1989).

Since 1988, this transformation has gained yet further dimension with becoming functional (when worn as part of daily life), kinetic (when they move) as soft sculptures and/or costumes hand knitted, hand sewn (1991) in line with my forms on canvas. Functionality has continued further with the addition of accessories like earrings, shoe clips, necklaces, handbags, furniture pieces like tables and chairs, painted glass vases, all in line with the forms of my paintings.

1972-79 studied ballet and stage decoration and costume in Madame Olga Private School, Istanbul, Turkey
