About Chris Hankey

I was born in lancaster Feb 15th 1963 my hobbies include astronomy, long distance cycle touring, mountaineering and snowboarding, which is where I get the inspiration to paint. I live and cycle and paint and draw with my family in Cornwall. As far back as I can remember I have been fascinated by nature from watching atlantic storms, wildlife, thunderstorms to observing the universe through a telescope, drawing the Moon, planets galaxies and always being a part of the experience through drawing and painting, cycling and mountaineering. Having this constant interaction with nature has had a profound effect on my philosophical outlook. I view the emergence of consciousness as the universe become self aware that there is a deep and profound interconnection between consciousness and nature. There is a creative energy to the way the sea, the land, the atmosphere, the artist interact, and light, it seems to me that there is the light of nature and the light of consciousness through which we explore the world through a dynamic and creative relationship between our conscious selves and natue. However I do not view the light of mind and the light of nature as separate creations but as natural phenomena emerging through the natural evolution of the universe and the laws of nature. So I paint the creative fluid interaction between nature and mind.

Cycling has always been the beginning of my creative process, It is how I go to work, carrying sketchbooks watercolours even small oil paintings and materials into the landscape to begin or continue an artwork. In 2010 I gave up car ownership completely, and since then I have cycled over 36000 miles exploring the coastline, cove's and landscapes of Cornwall. The simple act of taking a sketchbook and cycling, clears my mind, almost I would say it is a form of meditation allowing the tones and colours, the texture of the landscape, seascape to soak into my consciousness, stopping to draw whenever it occurs. These cycling journeys are a fundamental part of the artwork..... in fact they are artworks in there own right, a fundamental and crative response to nature, a choice to be as close to nature as possible.

On my eleventh birthday I was given my first road touring bicycle on that day I planned to cycle around the world. A dream that has been with me ever since. Rather than an artist in residence….I like to call this project an artist in transience, producing artworks along the way. This is an ongoing and self sustained journey. Fully loaded cycle touring…..and unsupported. So a major part of this is to find galleries willing to promote my painting in order for myself and my son to continue this journey. In the Summer of 2017 the next part of this journey will be a 10 month cycle tour of Wales, Ireland, Scotland including the Outer Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland following on from this we will be heading South into Europe and finally concluding this part of our world cycle tour journeying through Scandinavia, Iceland and Greenland. During the tour I will as always have sketchbooks, drawing and watercolour materials to record the journey and at various stages pause to create new paintings on route. We will be documenting the journey through my website and through my social media websites, facebook, twitter, youtube and vimeo.
