Predominantly working in photography and moving image my work is a collaborative process between the subjects I photograph and myself. The photographic portrait & the self-portrait are key aspects of my work. All my recent projects have been community based and a direct result of socially engaged art practice. My research draws upon the history of art and contemporary practice.
Current projects involve appropriating artworks from Scottish Collections as staged photographs in a local and current context. The re-evaluation of artworks that results from my works unearth layered meanings, a new framework is created by this re-contextualising. The photographs I create contain something of both past and present. They are both familiar and unfamiliar. Im also developing a series of collaborative portraits with notable contemporary Scottish artists, in response to their practice.
I continue to work with historical collections and institutions to reinterpret existing and/or familiar artworks in a contemporary context to enable them to be better or differently understood by todays viewer. I hope to continue creating work which engages with political and social themes and issues.
