Ari Rothschild

Ari Rothschild is a self-taught artist and cinematographer who works works with analog film. He was born into a Hasidic family in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and raised within the Chabad tradition. Without access to formal secular schooling, he studied Jewish mysticism in rabbinical school before eventually leaving both the religion and the community he was raised in.

After stepping away from that world, he began working as a news photographer in New York City. He then moved to India, where he lived and shot a Bollywood feature. During that time, he also began exhibiting his early photographic work, with shows at Aakriti Art Gallery in New Delhi (Gen Next IV) and Divinity, Dance and Sensuality in Kolkata.

Since returning to the U.S., Rothschild has worked as a full-time cinematographer for over a decade.

In recent years, his focus has shifted toward still photography. Working with analog film allows for the direct translation of momentary and impermanent reality into an art print.

He lives and works in New York.
