The locket is symbolic of something that you want to keep close to your heart forever; a precious memory to treasure. Timeless and romantic, lockets were traditionally given to a loved ones, containing a photo or lock of hair. European designs for lockets appear to date to the 16th century, when small pendants were worn to conceal good luck charms to ward off evil spirits. During the Victorian era, we see them become a token of romantic love. Before the industrial revolution, people didn’t have photographs or other ways to keep each other close, so sentimental jewellery pieces like lockets (cameos would be another example) became a common way for loved ones to remember each other.
