About The Artwork

This work’s backdrop is the “Tower of Babel”, painted by Bruegel, the Elder. Its a painting that takes us back to a past when most painters survived and gained notoriety through patron’s commissions - men who were part of the political and/or religious power. Although artists (from the early XVI Century and back) were seen as artisans, many of them were nevertheless helping to construct “visions” of power; like in later Centuries, until today. In the utopia of reaching for the kingdom of Heaven, in the persistent search for happiness and paradise, humans end up amplifying hell on earth. The Tower takes over the horizon, as if swallowing it. Babel seems to be about to crumble and fall down; the chains and shackles are unable to hold it. A reference to Biblical scripts, when language became divided; humanity was no longer "one". Fragmentation, ruin, chaos and decadence lead to God’s punishment – a truly Christian viewpoint of contemporary society. There are two disfigured portraits on the foreground. One, a classical statue made of blue fetish props; the other, a doll, symptomatic of humanity’s struggle to survive in today’s world. They are enamored with each other: the present can’t create the future without looking back into the past. The core problem - as they try to deal with morals, affections and emotions, the tower’s fall looks imminent.
