Art Description

Painting: Wood, Acrylic, Found Objects, Paper on Paper, Steel, Wood.

"Burning the Fields", 2013, mixed media. A painted and collaged background supports elements of wire, wood and natural grapevine, all enclosed in a box of painted wood. 12.5 x 12.5 x 2 inches (30 x 30 5 cm).

A common practice in my childhood in rural Alabama was that of burning off the fields at the end of the harvest season, to prepare for plowing. In dry weather, the fire would often leap the fences and damage pastures and woods, but the custom was a ritual that seemed sometimes to transcend common sense.
