About The Artwork

This is a digital print on fabric of an original photograph of a real human skull and flowers, edited for expressive effect, and turned into an individual, unique, miniature stitched object. The fabric print was machine quilted with metallic thread and then hand stitched with cotton before being heavily embellished by hand with a variety of glass beads. The beaded fringe adds dimension, more texture, and movement to the piece. The image celebrates the tradition of skull symbolism in art that is an encouragement for us all to "Seize the Day." The organic textile processes in the work contrast with the computer generated image, updating the traditional skull based still life with a combination of new and old media. Creating this work is a form of meditation and healing for me, and I hope the viewer enjoys the message and can appreciate the hours and energy contained in the piece. This is a very small scale quilted work with significant hand embellishment. It is meant to hang on a wall, framed or unframed, and comes with a simple hanging device tied to the back. It is meant to look handmade, and has irregular shape akin to traditional and historical textiles I love from the Mediterranean world, such as fragments of Coptic weaving or Turkish carpets. The surface glitters with reflective glass and embedded stitches that create rich texture making it truly "jewelry for your wall."

While I am primarily a textile artist, I also explore how technology can create art using A/I software. My physical art combines my love of fabric art techniques with a serious bead addiction to create unique, highly embellished, expressive works of art. My work contains images of people, places, and things I find meaningful and important in my world, embellished to the hilt! Additionally, I also explore drawing, painting, mixed media, and digital embroidery as part of living the creative life. I live in Reading, Massachusetts with a wonderful assortment of critters that include dogs, cats, and parrots, some of which have appeared in my artwork. I teach Visual Art to the best, most creative and fun middle schoolers in the world at W.S. Parker Middle School, also in Reading. I also teach textile workshops and art classes to adults, and have taught a course in Art Quilting at Massachusetts College of Art. Since the age of 35 I've fought an ongoing battle with autoimmune disease and see creativity, both my own and that of my students, as a way to elevate the soul out of the continual discomfort that this disease brings.
