About The Artwork

All components of the artwork were taken or created by the author Château Edition (limited to 7 ud) - Total size: 127.0 x 190.5 cm – 50 x 75" - Image size: 115 x 172.5 cm – 45.3 x 67.9" - Margin size: 6 x 8.85 cm – 2.4 x 3.5" Artwork description: The image shows Christopher Columbus under a threatening sky, such as those that he had to look up to, when, in an almost endless journey, in harsh conditions, and quite possibly, filled with doubts he crossed the great Atlantic Ocean for the first time in history. In addition to abandoning his roots for an indefinite period, it blew against him a common idea, since the success of the journey would be the irrefutable proof of a diametrically different conception of space: that Earth was not flat but round. Columbus’ stance in this statue (Jeronimo Suñol and Arturo Mélida, 1885) seems the perfect resting place for a white bellied sea eagle. Sheltered in the footwear of the discoverer, a small bird seeking shelter from the spectacular eagle can also be seen. Who knows if Columbus, along with the knowledge and tools he used on his legendary journey, did not keep a carefully guarded secret, such as the presence of a white-bellied sea eagle who, with an excellent vision and guided by a superior power, indicated the way forward in search of the promised land. Significance of the artwork: This artwork shows how a normal person, after acquiring knowledge, with the adequate tools and with some help from others, can achieve the greatest goals. Define your vision, establish what you need to learn, the steps you need to give and pursue your dreams. About the media: About the brand of the paper, I use Canson because they provide outstanding quality paper. They have been in the market producing paper for artists for over 400 years. About the particular model of paper, I have selected Canson Infinity Edition Etching Rag 310 gsm, a 100% cotton Fine Art matte paper. This matte paper, with a smooth texture, provides a pictorial look which suits this artwork perfectly well. However this artwork also looks impressive printed on Canson Infinity Baryta Photographique 310 g, which provides a more photo realistic look, more striking. Contact Saatchi or me by email if you prefer your artwork printed on Baryta. After returning to his place of origin, he will observe it in a different way, as his references will have changed. Ideally, he will want to keep what he most likes of both parts. This artistic series shows the spontaneous visions of a past period in my life, my stay in Australia for 5 years, mixed with scenes of my current daily life. In most cases these visions include two elements: the Australian natural heritage, the most astonishing part of the country for me, with the (European) cultural heritage, less common in that part of the Hemisphere. The first of the elements, nature, reminds us where we are coming from. The second one, culture, how far we can go. With this series I have wanted to experience how both worlds could interact if they were merged. That is an impossible desire to satisfy, but at least I can now visually enjoy it.

I was born in Barcelona (Spain) in 1977. Shortly after I moved to Madrid and then to Cáceres, a small but charming town, as evidence the fact that it is a World Heritage Site by Unesco. I remember my childhood climbing to every place I could, continuously running, playing and fighting with my siblings, visiting the countryside every weekend, reading all I could (I used to devour Roald Dahl’s books), spending time with friends in the old town of Cáceres and travelling around Europe with my family in summer. I discovered my passion for photography at the age of 13. Something great happened before buying my camera: I went to the shop so many times to ask doubts that finally the bookseller gave me a photography book, which I instantly memorize, what helped me to become a better photographer from the beginning and to boost my motivation. At the age of 15 I had to move to Madrid. In that complex period of transition, at least I had my camera to keep creating and investigating new techniques. Soon I became interested in multiple exposures and zoom burst, techniques that helped me to win my first photography competitions, already in college time. In that same period, I bought a medium format camera. This type of camera has a higher film size than a full frame camera. Despite its weight, it helped to further increase my passion for photography, not only for its impressive image quality but for its absence of automatisms, what made the shooting a more premeditated, elaborated and artisanal act. At the end of my university studies I passed a test to be able to enrol in a studio photography course. Working in a studio, with just the dimly modelling lights of the flashes, it turns out and continues to be a fascinating experience to me. For the training, we used large format cameras, which are cameras with a very big film size, able to produce breathtaking quality. Finally, I enrolled in a digital photography retouching course, which was exactly what I needed to create my artistic compositions. All this resulted in new sources of motivation for my photography. When I finished my degree, I traveled to England for a year trying to leave behind my academic studies, but finally I had to find a job as an engineer. After more than a decade working and living in different cities and countries, I decided to return to my almost natal Cáceres, to focus my activity on artistic photography.
