Dark Matter 1 Collage

This piece was inspired by the artist Dieter Roth who was a multi-disciplinary artist who used many experimental materials and processes including food. Although acrylic paint is used in this work I have applied it more like printing ink and drawn it down over the paper revealing holes and smears that occur naturally. The paper background is natural and off-white with rough edges. It is purposefully stained with coffee cup stains and also has a few staple holes left in it. Wax paper has been applied and gives a transparency over the black paint and textural crinkles and folds. I have applied a golden yellow print of the side of my hand which reveals some subtle skin marks on close inspection. Sellotape has also been applied to the work which shows up in various lights and contrasts with the matt quality of the work. I'm hopeful that the sellotape will age in time and go a golden yellow colour as I know it usually does. In the top right there is a sellotape cross and in the bottom right the tape occurs again over my initials. The work also includes some brown paper and gouache paint in the lower right corner. Some paint stands out a little at the lower edge giving a little impasto effect. The work is non-representational, experimental and was worked quite quickly. It is not about anything except art itself but when I look at it I am reminded of a window at night with a hand resting against it. This work is not framed but could be traditionally framed to be flat or naturally framed where the edges of the paper can be seen. There is also a second work called Dark Matter 2 which is similar but not the same.
