About The Artwork

An abstract collage , using decorative and marbled papers . The golden cranes came from a piece of found paper . This work is conceived as a companion piece to the "Kyoto Garden " collage , and is inspired by 19th century Japanese prints.

Over the last year, my art has undergone a total transformation , from figurative drawing to abstract , painted collage and relief. I have been influenced by Japanese printing and sumi-e calligraphy cubist collage , Kurt Schwitters , Hans Arp and Bauhaus artists like Kandinsky and Paul Klee . I take fragments of found and printed paper , Japanese prints , gold leaf, typography and drawing, and set those elements against textured and painted grounds of vibrant colour . I have also recently become fascinated by rock art - pictograms and petroglyphs from across the world , employing the same ancient symbols - spirals , suns , moons stars , animals , birds , the eye - these signs speak to the ancient , archetypal part of our minds...
