Flow is from my current series 'Water'

It covers three quarters of our planet and makes up two thirds of our bodies. The island on which I live is surrounded by it and I am constantly engaged in childish fascination with it . The sea, water and reflection are major themes in this new series.

When we are in the company of water, whether it be rivers, swimming pools or the ocean, human beings are often at their most leisurely and carefree. The swimming pool photos are a way of extending the storytelling to illustrate the scope for play which water provides.
The reflections in the compositions are reflected a second time like a kaleidoscope and the artwork is in conversation with the subject itself.

A number of the works reference Alice in wonderland. Lewis Carol was a regular visitor to the Isle of Wight, the island where I live and work. The majority of Victorian literature written for children before Alice's Adventures in Wonderland were fairy tales that carried moral messages and instructions. Alice is completely different in its celebration of reckless adventure and an indulgence in the pure pleasures of the imagination.

I work mainly with paper. For me it is a material charged with emotion and familiarity.
A birthday card, a thumbed paperback and a scribbled note are all often sources of inspiration.
Since I was small I have made sense of my experiences by scrap booking and my current work is an evolution of this simple childhood activity.

Human habits and social behaviour inform an improvised process which combines collage, painting, and installation, sometimes of a public nature and not limited to the environment of a gallery. Carnivals, makeshift shrines, allotment gardens, protest signage and handwritten notes are some of the found forms of expression which intrigue and stimulate my arts practice. I’m interested in the cultural artefacts and experiences that are created for celebration, mourning, demonstration, worship or survival which allow us, for a brief moment, to journey psychologically within the joy, sadness, meditation and belief, and freedom or dependence of our fellow beings. JOANNE HUMMEL NEWELL ( b.1982 UK) trained at the Royal College of Art London and was hailed as ‘the next generation to turn its back on Emin and Hirst’s conceptual works’ by the Observer. Joanne has exhibited internationally including 53rd Venice Biennale, Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and Jerwood Drawing Prize, as well as being shortlisted for the Beers London Contemporary Visions exhibition. Commendations include Head of collections at Soho House, Kate Bryan, as one of the ‘Must see artists at the Other Art Fair’ and the Times Newspaper ‘Picking up a Picasso is one click away'. Joanne has a growing international collector base and is included in public and private collections in UK, US, Hong Kong, Europe and Australia. Joanne is currently represented by After Nyne Gallery, Folly and Muse Gallery, London/Munich and Newblood Art London.
