About The Artwork
‘Frida, Bill Board 2’, is a portrait of Frida Kahlo. As in the original black and white photograph, the work shows a challenging, defiant and proud woman. In this work ‘Frida, Bill Board 2’, Kahlo is represented as both scarred and fascinating. Portraits in this series are constructed with three different colour compositions. The portraits in red, pink and sepia are torn and recomposed in order to create the final portrait. Inspired by Andy Warhol’s portrait series, each work in this series is based on the same image. Unlike screen-print, the Bill Board series is produced with reproduction techniques that make each composition unique and original. The images are mirrored, enlarged and printed, then transferred onto canvas and finished with pastels. Rough lines and torn edges, remind the viewer of a worn vintage bill board, yet the overall impression is tranquil and soft. Commissions are possible in this format; 120 x 120 cm / 47” x 47”

Born in Rotterdam in 1962, Marian Williams lives and works in France. Whilst recycling objects, authentic photos and original illustrations from vintage magazines and books, she creates dynamic, striking analog compositions in paint, collage and assemblage. Her work has been on show in France, England, Italy, Albania, the Netherlands, Serbia and in the USA. The works, influenced by pop art, surrealism and dadaism, show originality and freshness, in which classical art, retro chic, and kitsch are combined in a challenging way. The artist's political engagement for the environment, women's rights, freedom and social justice, are recurring themes. Her story telling is sincere, expressed in various ways, sometimes minimalist, sometimes complex. 'When I was five years old I jumped in a bin at school to save schoolbooks from the 1950's which had been thrown away. Everything about these book was precious to me; the images, the letter type, the torn pages, the colours and the memories. They reflected the history of daily life gone by. They were art to me."
