Take your time. You’ll need it to explore the stamps in the background. Each stamp an artwork itself. Most stamps are from 1920 to 1940 but you will also find a couple from 1883 to 1890. Stamps from Persia, before the country became Iran. From Bayern when it was still an independent country and stamps from the Portuguese’s colonies, all with the same design and with Cabo Verde, Mocambique, Angola and S.Tomé E.Principe printed in black. Do you find the stamp with Lenin in black and red? Or Gandhi? Back a few steps and Frida will appear. A perfect mix of artistry. Collage and acrylic on Archer acid free paper.

Pia Lilenthal is a contemporary street mix-media artist. She combines stencil work with multiple layers and techniques in the backgrounds. It could be watercolor, acrylic paint, screen printing, collages of stamps. Or a mix of them all. Portraits are a common motif, often women, containing details connected to the person in the different layers. Her background as graphic designer and long experience of making sketches digitally, comes handy when planning compositions and different color combinations. The final artwork though, is always made by hand.
